During his childhood he lost his remaining vision, and both his eyes were eventually removed. Abandoned by his mother as an infant, he was raised by his grandparent s in the Smoky Mountains until the age of five, when he was sent to the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, North Carolina. A congenital disorder left him almost completely blind. Milsap was born January 16, 1943, in Robbinsville, North Carolina. It would be hard to forget that special moment. The station aired the song twice as we headed to the Cobbly Knob motel located just outside of Gatlinburg as a light smoky mountain mist fell on the windshield. The artist was Ronnie M lsap and the song was written by Kye Fleming and Dennis Morgan who had written previous songs for Barbara Mandrell and would go on to write songs for artists as diverse as Aretha Franklin and Eric Clapton. The song had just been released and was getting constant air play on the local station because it was written in a local setting.

Just as we entered the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the spur that runs from Pigeon Forge to Gatlinburg a song came on the radio that we had just tuned to WSEV in Sevierville, Tennessee. We had never been in that area so we packed into the car and headed for the mountains to scout out the area and look for a new home. In September of 1980, I was promoted from the companyвЂ™s newspaper in Hamilton, Ohio to become publisher of their newly acquired operations in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
